Is the UK Animation Industry Under Threat?
I didn’t quite realise this article was THAT old when I mentioned it earlier today but I have managed to find it. The video can be found here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8225954.stm (3:06 total).
But there’s also a post about it here: http://www.animationforumwm.co.uk/news-display.aspx?id=155
There’s also a small amount of that touched on here: http://www.nwda.co.uk/pdf/Videogames%20%20Animation%20Industry.pdf
One quote from the nwda site being “Industry campaigners say that due to a lack
of government assistance, Britain has now slipped from third place in the face of harsh competition from France and Canada, where there is considerable state support for games staff.”
It also mentions “For the last 30 years, Britain has had the third most successful video games industry in the world, behind the United States and Japan. It has created many worldwide hits such as Tomb Raider and the box-office busting, uber-controversial Grand Theft Auto series.” So it would seem it’s not just a problem within the 2D animation sectors but realy across the board.
I’m obviously not sure how much of this is just moaning and whining and how much is actually fact and just how little (careers wise) in the UK there is but since I aim to stay in the UK it does feel as though its enough to slightly put me off.
